About Our Garden Club:
Mt. Vernon’s present Garden Club is in its eighth year. It has grown from
an initial starting group of about 17 members to this year’s 131
membership. The membership is, of course, open to all residents and we
currently have several men who are very active members.
The original and still primary goal of the Club is to select and fund the
plantings for the entries to Mt. Vernon. Over the past several years
additional projects such as beautifying the Clubhouse entry, the swimming
pool, the gazebo and adding to the relandscaping of Independence Drive
areas. In addition, a Memorial Fund has been established through Memorial
Card donations and special plantings made to honor deceased friends and
relatives.
April will be a busy month for Garden Clubbers.
April 9 - 9:30 a.m.- Memorial Dedication Service following Dunkers
The service was held in the area adjacent to the lakeside of the
Clubhouse. Family members of those being honored have been sent
invitations. This year a Desert Cassia has been planted near last year’s
Memorial Bismarck palm. This is a flowering small tree that develops an
umbrella shape covered with yellow blossoms for at least six months
during the winter season. A second area at the corner of Independence
Drive and Mt. Vernon has also been designated as a Memorial area. Plants
selected for this site are an orange Jatropha a year-round bloomer,
flanked by Starburst shrubs and a Trellis background planted with
climbing Tropical Wisteria and Bleeding Heart in front of trellis. (See Photos on next page for some of the activities)
April 10 - 12 noon - Annual Spring Luncheon
A light luncheon of Quiche, fruit, salad and dessert will be served in
the Clubhouse. Our speaker for the day will be Elizabeth Waterston, one
of Mt. Vernon’s own who has just published a new book.
At this annual event the officers for 2002-03 will be introduced. They
are President, Nan Miller; Vice-President and Program Chairman, Jan
Halliwell, Secretary, Mary Hayes and Treasurer, Mary Maher.
April 18 - Dunkers
The Garden Club will sponsor Dunkers on this date furnishing coffee and
rolls as their way of saying "thank you" for all the support received
during the year. |
